Tata Steel India Crude Steel Production Jumps 10 Percent To 6.21 Million Tons In Second Quarter

Every three months, Tata Steel Limited shares a snapshot of how much steel it made and how much it delivered. The numbers for the July–September 2026 quarter are now out. They are provisional, meaning the final figures may be slightly different, but this is the first complete picture of how the quarter went.

The filing is a press release dated October 7, 2026, sent to BSE and NSE under Regulation 30 read with Regulation 51 of SEBI's listing regulations.

India: 6.21 Million Tons of Crude Steel

Tata Steel's India operations produced 6.21 million tons of crude steel in 2QFY27. The India figure includes Tata Steel Standalone and Neelachal Ispat Nigam Limited, on a proforma basis.

Put that alongside the previous two quarters and a pattern shows up:

Quarter India Crude Steel Production (mn tons)
2QFY26 (Jul–Sep 2025) 5.64
1QFY27 (Apr–Jun 2026) 5.76
2QFY27 (Jul–Sep 2026, provisional) 6.21

The company says crude steel production was up 8% quarter on quarter and 10% year on year, primarily driven by higher output at its Jamshedpur and Kalinganagar facilities. For the first half of FY27 as a whole, India crude steel production stood at 11.97 million tons, up 10% compared to 10.87 million tons in the same period last year.

Deliveries in India: 5.97 Million Tons

Production tells you how much steel came out of the furnaces. Deliveries tell you how much actually reached buyers. For India, Tata Steel delivered 5.97 million tons in 2QFY27.

The company says India deliveries were up 15% quarter on quarter and 7% year on year, supported by what it describes as an enriched product mix and stable demand across market segments, despite the seasonal rains. On a half-year basis, India deliveries rose 8% year on year to 11.14 million tons.

Within those deliveries, a few product verticals stood out:

  • The Automotive & Special Products vertical achieved what the company calls its best-ever second-quarter volumes at approximately 1.1 million tons, up 9% quarter on quarter and 19% year on year. The company attributes this to the ramp-up of Continuous Annealing and Galvanising lines at Kalinganagar and a Combi mill at Jamshedpur.
  • The Branded Products & Retail vertical achieved best-ever quarterly volumes at approximately 2.2 million tons. The company says Tata Tiscon achieved its best-ever quarterly volumes and grew 7% quarter on quarter, while Tata Kosh, its galvanised brand, grew 25% quarter on quarter.
  • The Construction & Solutions vertical delivered approximately 0.6 million tons, with ready-to-use solutions registering 32% year-on-year growth.
  • The Engineering and Packaging vertical delivered approximately 0.4 million tons, up 12% quarter on quarter, driven by higher sales to oil and gas customers.
  • The company also says Colors achieved best-ever quarterly volumes, up 34% quarter on quarter.
  • Gross Merchandise Value from its e-commerce platforms, Tata Steel Aashiyana and DigECA, was ₹2,860 crore for the quarter, up 30% quarter on quarter.

Netherlands and Thailand: The International Picture

Outside India, Tata Steel operates in the Netherlands and Thailand. The Netherlands operation measures liquid steel production, while Thailand reports saleable steel production. These are different measurement points in the steelmaking process, so the numbers are not directly comparable to India's crude steel figure.

Location Production 2QFY27 (mn tons) Deliveries 2QFY27 (mn tons)
Netherlands 1.52 1.30
Thailand 0.32 0.31

For the Netherlands, the company says the Direct Sheet Plant restarted in August 2026 and is operating at rated capacity under an agreed framework with local regulatory authorities. On a half-year basis, Netherlands production was 3.07 million tons and deliveries were 2.70 million tons.

In Thailand, deliveries were marginally lower quarter on quarter, which the company attributes primarily to heavy rains in September 2026.

UK: No Production, Just Deliveries

The UK operation is in a different situation from the other three. Tata Steel UK does not appear in the production table at all — the company says it is serving its customers via downstream processing of purchased substrate, meaning it is not making steel from scratch but processing steel it has bought.

UK deliveries for the quarter were 0.38 million tons. The company says this was impacted by inventory buildup in the UK supply chain ahead of the implementation of new safeguard measures on July 1, 2026. It also says it has fully ramped up production at the Llanwern pickle line.

The Full Picture in One Table
